The word’s out that Stig Asmussen, director of God of War III and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order, is currently working on a single-player video game set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons in partnership with publisher Wizards of the Coast.
Currently in development for PC, it’s set to be Asmussen’s studio Giant Skull‘s inaugural project, to be built using the Unreal 5 engine. But have no fear – console details will be released later down the line.
Here’s what Wizards of the Coast president John Hight had to say about the project:
Stig and the team at Giant Skull are exactly the type of exceptionally talented creators we want to work with and I’m so happy to be reuniting with him on this new project.
Unfortunately we don’t have specifics in terms of release dates, in-game content or even development art/renderings, so we doubt we’ll see the game released before 2026 at the earliest.
In fact, the oddest thing about this to me is that we don’t even have a name yet. This is EARLY early stages, it seems.
According to Asmussen, the studio is aiming to “craft a rich new Dungeons & Dragons universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”
Hmmm, okay.
Wizards of the Coast announced the deal as they move on from developer Larian Studios (of Baldur’s Gate 3 renown). They’ve got several irons in the fire though, including the sci-fi RPG Exodus (currently being developed by Archetype Entertainment), and Atomic Arcade’s Snake Eyes.
Interesting to see what’s going to come of all of these exciting projects.
What do you think of the news about Giant Skull’s first project? Will you be watching with interest, or should we just shut up now and come back to you when we have actual juicy deets?
